- Description:
- This transcript of a July 6, 1977, oral history interview conducted by William Chafe with Michael Weaver primarily documents Mike Weaver's role in Greensboro in desegregated housing opportunities and as a member of the chamber of commerce. Weaver recalls urging his family to adopt an open housing policy in their rental properties in Greensboro; his reasons for doing so; and the community's opinion of his efforts; and the importance of maintaining racially balanced housing. He also talks about John R. Taylor's pioneering integration policies; the newspaper's reports on the open housing policy; work with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Human Relations Commission; Hal Sieber's community work; and struggles within the commission. Other topics include being kicked out of a tenants' strike meeting; GAPP; and Nelson Johnson's leadership.
