- This transcript of an oral history interview by William Chafe circa 1975 with William Thomas Jr. primarily documents Thomas' involvement in the 1963 demonstrations in Greensboro, North Carolina. Topics include Dr. Willa Player and the Bennett College students; the A&T administration's response to the sit-ins; threatening to picket churches because of their lack of support; marches and sit-ins in 1963; the roles of Jesse Jackson, Knighton "Tony" Stanley, and other CORE leaders; forcing older community leaders to recognize students' importance; building support in the community; and his opinions of David Schenck and the Cone family. Thomas also discusses growing up in Greensboro, especially racial segregation and the influence of teachers and families in decided to combat it; his membership in the NAACP Youth Chapter; the national and local NAACP's response to the sit-ins; high school students carrying the 1960 sit-ins through the summer months; voting rights in Greensboro; the local movement after 1963; and his post-A&T education.
