- This July 13, 1977, oral history interview conducted by William Chafe with Joanne Bluethenthal primarily documents Ms. Bluethenthal's involvement in school integration in Greensboro, North Carolina. Bluethenthal gives her first impressions of Greensboro and discusses becoming involved in community organizations, especially in the arena of public housing and daycare and with the Council of Jewish Women. Most of the interview focuses on efforts to effectively integrate of schools from 1969 to 1972, including forming the Human Relations Advisory Committee for the school board; her personal efforts to interview members of the community about the education system; retreats held; specific activities such as staffing information centers, putting aides on buses, having open houses and advertising campaigns; the role of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and school board; support from local corporations; the work of Doris Hutchinson with PTAs; and groups in favor of and in opposition to school desegregation. Other topics include the threat of violence, community opinion of Hal Sieber, and the Greensboro Community Fellowship.
