- In this November 4, 1979, article from the Greensboro Daily News, staff writer Winston Cavin presents a firsthand account of what he witnessed during the November 3, 1979, Death to the Klan rally, at which five members of the Communist Workers Party (CWP) were shot to death. Cavin notes his surprise at how quickly the situation escalated into violence and at how no one seemed to be looking for cover when the shooting began. He describes the KKK gunfire as "relentless" and recounts that CWP leader Nelson Johnson eventually took refuge behind the same car as he did. He also describes the police as "conspicuously absent" until about two minutes after the shooting stopped.
