- These three black and white photographs taken in the fall of 1956 and depict the first two African American students admitted to the Woman?s College of the University of North Carolina (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro) . In 1956, JoAnne Smart of Raleigh, North Carolina (left) and Bettye Ann Davis Tillman (right) of Wadesboro, North Carolina became the first African-American students to enroll at the College. The two graduated in 1960. JoAnne Smart Drane later became a member of the Board of Trustees.
