- Description:
- This handwritten note, dated April 18, 1973, documents a conversation between University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Dean James Allen and attorney Michael K. Curtis, who was representing several students in a planned lawsuit over the status of the Neo-Black Society at UNCG. Curtis stated that a lawsuit would probably be filed unless the Neo-Black Society instituted an affirmative action program to recruit white students. On March 26, 1973, SGA had voted to reclassify (removed funding and recognition from) the Neo-Black Society. The SGA decision was overturned by university administration on the basis of faulty evidence and improper procedure by SGA, resulting in an eventual legal case that led to the Neo-Black Society's reinstatement as a recognized and funded organization. The note is signed "Helen"; she may have been Dean Allen's secretary.
