- Description:
- In this April 8, 1979 Greensboro Daily News article, Greg Lewis reports on a celebration in honor of Dr. Warmoth Gibbs, former North Carolina A&T State University (A&T) president, on his eighty-seventh birthday. Gibbs was president of A&T at the time of the 1960 sit-in protests at the Greensboro Woolworth store and in retrospect said he felt he had no reason to pull the students back to the school. Commonly referred to as "Dean Gibbs," he began his career at A&T in 1926. Under his leadership, the school broke barriers into two traditionally all-white areas — receiving accreditation from the Southern Association of Schools and College and being listed with predominately white land grant institutions. He retired from A&T in 1965, but continued his involvement with the university. This article was clipped and saved in a scrapbook on desegregation by Clarence "Curly" Harris, manager of the Greensboro Woolworth store at the time of the 1960 sit-ins that spawned lunch counter sit-ins across the South and rejuvenated the civil rights movement.
