- In this May 29, 1971 Greensboro Daily News article, Joe Knox chronicles the efforts to desegregate Greensboro businesses starting with sit-ins at the Greensboro Woolworth lunch counter by four North Carolina A&T State University (A&T) students in 1960 and continuing in 1962 and 1963 with massive street demonstrations led by A&T student body president Jesse Jackson. Knox identifies the involvement of city officials such as Jack Elam and David Schenck; organizations, such as CORE and NAACP; and prominent citizen such as Dr. George Simpkins, Rev. Otis Hairston, and W.O. Conrad. This article was clipped and saved in a scrapbook on desegregation by Clarence "Curly" Harris, manager of the Greensboro Woolworth store at the time of the 1960 sit-ins. Also included are Harris? comments on the article along with a drawing of the Greensboro Four at the Woolworth lunch counter.
