- Description:
- In this November 6, 1980 Greensboro Daily News article, Lindsey Gruson discusses the report Black/White Perception released by the North Carolina Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The committee released and discussed the report in a public panel. The committee found that blacks and whites view Greensboro in radically different ways, and called for the city to adopt a ward system and increase affirmative action programs. Committee Chairman W.W. Finlator stated that whites had control of city government, and recommended that the Human Relations Commission adopt a Citizens Advisory Committee for citizen involvement. The committee referenced the 1960 Woolworth store sit-ins, the 1969 Dudley High/North Carolina A&T State University protests, and the 1979 murders at the Death to the Klan march as proof that Greensboro "has deep, unexplored racial problems." The reporter points out that the findings in Black/White Perception are similar to the recent findings of the Human Relations Commission and the Citizens Review Committee. This article was clipped and saved in a scrapbook about the twentieth anniversary of the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins by Clarence "Curly" Harris, manager of the Greensboro Woolworth store at the time of the sit-ins.
