- Description:
- In this November 6, 1979 article, Jim Schlosser of the Greensboro Record interviews the uncle of Billy Joe Franklin, a suspect in the shooting of five members of the Communist Workers Party (CWP) at an anti-Klan rally in Greensboro on November 3, 1979. Fletcher Whitesides, a chief deputy in the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, says he was surprised to learn of his nephew's involvement and membership in the KKK, since he had seen no indication of it previously. Whitesides says that Franklin had never been in major trouble and was "not a bad boy." He also discusses community reaction in Lincoln County; five of the defendants were from the area.
