- This February 28, 1969 article published in the Guilford College student newspaper, The Guilfordian, announces an upcoming visit by then Assistant Secretary of the Health, Education, and Welfare Department under the Nixon Administration. Farmer was one of the founding members of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Though a registered liberal, Farmer accepted the position in the Nixon Administration in an effort to work within the system to bring about change. His hope was to establish a line of trust between black youth and the government. His visit to Guilford College offered an opportunity for students to discuss current issues with a significant policy-maker.
