Phelps- Direct 61

Q. And this was the time, you say, when Mr. Kea and
Mr. Danner were present?

A. That's right.

Q. Tell in your own words what happened at the inter-
view, please sir?

A. I opened the interview, as is customary, and the three
of us talked with Miss Hunter about the various questions which
we normally ask at an interview, and she answered these ques-
tions. That is about the gist of it.

Q. How long were you questioning her?

A. I would say forty five minutes, probably, maybe a
little longer.

Q. Would you say anywhere from forty five minutes to an
hour fifteen minutes or so?

A. Perhaps.

Q. Is it customary for you to interview applicants for
this period of time?

A. In difficult cases perhaps longer than this.

Q. What do you mean by difficult?

A. Cases where there is some question about whether the
student qualifies for admission to the university or not.

Q. Was there any question in your mind concerning the
adequacy of the transcripts of Miss Hunter?

A. Well, we had never had a student from this school
before, so far as I know, so this would always raise a question
as to whether this school turns out the type of students which

we [SIC] wold want to accept at the University.

Q. What school are you talking about?

A. Well, her high school or her college [SIC] eitherone.

Q. Do you recall what they were?

A. Turner High in Atlanta, I believe, and Wayne State
University in Detroit.

Q. You were not familiar with Wayne State University?

A. No. I had never interviewed a student from Wayne
State before.

Q. Were you familiar with the University itself?

A. Not very familiar.

Q. I mean you do know that it is an accredited university
do you not?

A. I believe so.

Q. Was there anything about her high school transcript
that you had any doubt about?

A. Only that we have never received a student from this
school before, [SIC] wo we don't know what the transcript means. If
we get a student from a school that we have never received a
student before we question, whether the school is accredited,
whether the grades mean what we would hope they would mean.

Q. Did you ever have the [SIC] occasoon to write the high
school from which she came?

A. No.

Q. Did you ever have the occasion to write the university
from which she came?

Q. Do you recall who made out the check sheet in con-
nection with Miss Hunter's application?

A. I made out the check sheet.

Q. Is that - we are referring to the interview sheet.

A. Yeah.

Q. Is that interview sheet here, sir? We subpoenaed it.
(Paper handed to counsel) I show you Plff. Ex. 13 and ask you
