- Description:
- Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission in 1963 and 1965 with statistics from counties around the state about race, crimes, and punishments. The State Sovereignty Commission gathered information about the race of criminals and the sentences for crimes in order to refute claims that white men in Mississippi were never convicted for crimes against African Americans. In November 1965 a white man was convicted of raping an African American woman. The conviction was reported around the country as the first of its kind since Reconstruction.
