- Side 1: Interview with Sallie Martin in Chicago. Side 2: Interview with Sallie Martin continued from Side 1. Interview with Robert Anderson by Laurraine Goreau in Chicago. Abstract for Martin: [00:00–52:15] Sallie Martin, the Chicago-based gospel music vocalist [known as the "Mother of Gospel,"] was interviewed on November 4, 1972 in Chicago. Martin describes her gospel music beginnings due to working with Thomas A. Dorsey, starting in 1929 – 00:31. She talks about first meeting Mahalia Jackson in 1927 or 1928 while Jackson was with the Johnson Singers. She also states that many churches at first "didn't receive (Jackson) too well," but Martin encouraged her to continue – 06:43. Martin says, "It's too tough out there now. Too many are out there. Everyone wants to sing," describing why she personally stopped traveling to perform – 30:00. She talks about Jackson's ex-husbands and the period immediately preceding her death – 43:00. [00:00 – 09:14] Martin's interview continues on LG001Goreau_Side1a with her discussing Jackson's plans to go back to her ex-husband "Minnis" Galloway, among other topics – 02:45. [00:00–14:49] Martin's interview continues further on LG001Goreau_Side2a, beginning with her discussing interactions with Martin Luther King Jr. and his family.
