- Description:
- Side 1: A Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Channel 26, WGNO-TV, on 1974-01-23. Side 2: Interview with Elliot Beal by Iris Day in New Orleans, Louisiana on 1974-02-01. Abstract for Beal: [15:57-47:33] On LG077Goreau_Side2, while Laurraine Goreau is in Biloxi working on her book, her friend and assistant, Iris Day, interviews Elliot Beal from his home in New Orleans. Day has a list of questions provided by Goreau regarding dates and details of various events in Mahalia Jackson's life which Beal answers. He shares a humorous anecdote about driving through the desert on the way to Los Angeles in a hot car because Jackson was "afraid of air conditioning" – 17:10. Beal also describes meeting Sidney Poitier after an appearance in A Raisin in the Sun around the time of Jackson's first Madison Square Garden affair – 23:24. Day and Beal discuss Jackson's first meeting with Harry Belafonte – 27:48. Beal mentions Jackson's uncanny ability to "smell death" – 36:30. They spend some time discussing the lyrics to Jackson's song Didn't It Rain with Beal singing a few bars – 38:19. Day laments to Beal that she has been unable to locate a copy of Duke Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige album which Goreau needs as research for the book. Beal says he has the record and offers to loan it to Day once she returns from visiting Goreau in Biloxi – 39:11.
