- Letter from Associate Justice Stephen Johnson Field to Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, dated June 30, 1866, expressing his support for the passing of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Fourteenth Amendment gave citizenship to African Americans and guaranteed equal protection for all citizens under the law.
