- In 1949, when Caryl May was in the fifth grade, she began a pen pal relationship with a young East German boy named Gerhard Bach. One day, May received a letter from East Germany, and subsequently never heard from her friend again. Fifty-five years later she found her old letters. May's sister-in-law employed the help of a professor from Germany and they were able to track down Bach in Germany. They continued to write after locating each other.
