- Daughter of activist and staunch anti-communists, Arnold and Verena Strautnieks of Jelgava, Latvia, Inese Stokes lived in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany for five years, before her family immigrated to a farm in New York state when she was seven. Hearing of good jobs in the city of Chicago, Mr. Strautnieks moved his family to a boarding house on Chicago's Near North Side. Inese then grew up in Chicagos Austin neighborhood. She was active in working for a free Latvia.
