- Born in Decatur, Indiana, Michael McConnell came to Chicago in 1968 to attend McCormick Theological Seminary. McConnell became active in anti-Vietnam War protests while in college in Ohio, and continued his activism in Chicago. He became involved with Chicago's immigrant and refugee communities through his work with Universidad Popular, a group that taught English to Spanish-speakers. This led to his involvement with the Chicago Religious Task Force on El Salvador, and subsequently, to extensive involvement with the Sanctuary Movement.
