- Gary Huber was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1946. After a rural upbringing, he entered the United States Army, where he served as a jeep driver in Germany. He re-enlisted, seeking a transfer to the United States, where he was stationed at the Nike-Hercules missile site in Munster, Indiana. Huber worked in the Chicago-Gary Defense Area, and experienced the military's preparations for the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In 1969, Huber volunteered to go to Vietnam, where he served until late 1970. He then left the military, but remained active with the National Guard and Army Reserve throughout his career in the private sector.
