- James Darby served in the United States Navy during the early 1950s. He was a coder and typist, stationed in the Mediterranean, and he was trained in the Russian language. He was also a gay man in the military and left after this service. He was concerned that he would be discovered and discharged. Darby later worked with the Chicago Mayor's Council on Veterans Affairs.
