- Mr. Viramontes was sixteen years old and working in the coatroom of the Chicago Public Library's main building at East Randolph Street and North Michigan Avenue during the Democratic National Convention. One night, after work, he noticed a tear gas haze in the air and people scrambling. After he became aware of what was happening, he phoned a cousin to pick him up and drive him to his residence in the Pilsen neighborhood. From his home, he could still smell tear gas.
