- In 1867, Edmund Asa Ware became the Freedmen's Bureau superintendent of education. He helped to establish Atlanta University. As president of the Board of Trustees, Ware became president in 1869 of the new institution, Atlanta University. he served as president for 16 years. He died September 25, 1885.
