- Description:
- HENRY W. MAIER MAYOR OFFICE OF THE MAYOR MILWAUKEE August 8, 1967 Mailed to a list of 46 people: Negro businessmen (grass roots) Thank you for taking time out from your busy schedule to attend the meeting with me in City Hall last Friday to discuss the forming of a "grass roots" bi-racial council. I know that it was a hardship for many of you who attended to take time off from your jobs and to leave your families at home during this time of civil emergency. Rest assured, however, that the concern you have showed for the problem will not go unnoticed. It is my sincere belief that the dialogue we established at the meeting will be the springboard for welding a real and lasting united between the non-whites and the whites of our community. There already is evidence that our meeting was fruitful. Several of the proposals we discussed were incorporated into the program of action adopted jointly the following day by the leadership of the Inter-Denominational Ministerial Alliance and myself. As you recall, we discussed the idea of youth working more closely with the members of the Police Department. One of the points that we announced Saturday was that the proposed bi-racial council work with the Fire and Police Commission to establish curricula to train youths 14 years and older for eventual positions in the Police Department, and that the matter be pursued with the Superintendent of Schools and the Director of the Vocational School.
