WPA., 7/28/36, Key West, Fla., Text on reverse: "Hand labor is being used in Key West for the backfill on the major WPA project there--a modern system of sewer collection and disposal and water distribution. This photograph was taken at the intersection of two lines running at right angles. Hard work in a tropical sun--being well accomplished by several hundred Key West WPA workers." Stetson Kennedy (1916-2011), writer and civil rights activist, collected these photographs during the course of his career fighting for equality throughout the Southern United States.
