- Text on reverse: "Isaac Woodward, who fought to defend democracy against the onslaught of Nazism in World War II, had both his eyes gouged out shortly afterward by a Carolina policeman who barred his way to a bus station toilet (no toilet facility having been provided for Negroes.)" This photo was taken five months after the incident. Stetson Kennedy (1916-2011), writer and civil rights activist, collected these photographs during the course of his career fighting for equality throughout the Southern United States.
