This address is President Kennedy's response to the situation in Birmingham (civil rights demonstrations and protests) and at the University of Alabama (resistance to the efforts to integrate the campus). "In this document, President Kennedy offers his endorsement of black Civil Rights activism. This document offers evidence of the appeal to the morality and faith of people, primarily white southerners, to lead their communities towards change. Students will use this document to evaluate the ideals of democracy and the privileges of being American. This document will also be used to motivate a discussion on the topic of whether or not the promise of democracy has successfully been offered to all citizens."
