- Description:
- In this interview, Reverend Thomas Holt recalls his experiences serving in the United States Navy as an aircraft mechanic during the Cuban Missile Crisis and later in the Navy Reserves. He describes his family, growing up years, and his reasons for joining the Navy. He recalls his training and his duties as a plane captain, including the relationship he developed with the pilot of the aircraft for which he was responsible. He recalls the American civil rights movement, prejudice and discrimination in the military, and how military life seemed to facilitate better race relations because those who served in the military learned to work and live with people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. He describes his post-military career working for the Federal Aviation Administration and how he entered the ministry. He recalls how he joined the Atlanta Chapter Tuskegee Airmen and reflects on the life lessons he learned in the military.
