- Description:
- In this interview, John Broome describes his experiences as a black sailor in the United States Navy during World War II. He trained at United States Naval Training Center (USNTC) Bainbridge, then became a captain's boy in the Pacific. It was his job to get the captain of the ship whatever he needed, or to pass the word to the Marine guard at the door for additional needs. Part of his duties included serving the captain's guests and keeping any secrets he may have heard. He also had some schooling while aboard ship. At that time, the Navy was still segregated and his ward was all black. He was aboard ship during a torpedo hit and describes what it was like to lose friends.
