- Description:
- The Clifford Baldowski cartoon depicts four scenes. In the first, an elderly couple is getting their social security check out of the mailbox. In the next, Barry Goldwater and a rooty toot hold up signs with his 1956 opinions of social welfare: "It means weakness of the individual" and "Against pensions at age 60 for totally disabled."In the third frame, Goldwater is joined by his running mate, William Miller, and others. They hold signs reading "Against Verr-Mills bill, 1960" and "A Private Concern 1960." In the final frame, he holds a sign "Against hospital care for the aged 1964" while another person holds one labeled "Social security should be voluntary, 1963." A sign lies across the final frames and reads "Government must begin to withdraw from a whole series of social welfare programs 1960." By the final frame, a crowd obscures the old couple.
