- "Seeks Pension for Crib Rescue. Thirty-eight years ago this week Garrett A. Morgan risked his life to rescue workmen trapped in the disasterous explosion at the waterworks crib. Now 77, ailing, and nearly blind, Morgan has renewed his efforts to obtain some pension for his rescue efforts. Morgan, who invented one of the first gas masks, went down into the crib three times, rescued six men. He received a diamond-studded medal for his efforts. Morgan and his wife live at 5202 Harlem Ave.-- Photo verso.
