- Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Ralph D. Abernathy is shown holding a plaque that he is presenting to Berry Gordy, Jr. in recognition of Gordy's support in the civil rights movement. Written on attached memo: Special thanks - The Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reads from a plaque he presented to Mr. Berry Gordy Jr., president of the Motown Record Corp. Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr. awaits her turn to present Mr. Gordy a set of Dr. King's books. The plaque presented to Mr. Gordy by Rev. Abernathy was inscribed: "In appreciation for your contributions to the cause of freedom". Mr. Gordy had flown in some of his top artists to perform at a benefit in honor of the Poor People's Campaign staged in Atlanta last Thursday.
