- Description:
- This video features part two of a social security rally held at First Iconium Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, moderated by Reverend Timothy McDonald. Participants at the meeting discuss the need and importance of social security benefits as a human right. This meeting opens with speakers Dr. Keith Jennings, LaTosha Brown, and Georgia state representative Nan Orrock explaining the benefits of social security checks and the negative impacts of the privatization of social security on poor communities. At 00:29:10, Joseph E. Lowery speaks about "redefining America" in order to close the gap between poor and rich communities. Lowery emphasizes that Black communities must work together to control the judiciary to protect social security. This video concludes with remarks from William Lucy, the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). Lucy speaks about social security being the "third rail of politics", emphasizing the current social security program crisis as a money issue for rich communities and an attempt to end the New Deal, resulting in the decrease of human and workers' rights for poor communities.
