- This audio recording features proceedings from Pilgrimage to Washington kickoff events on April 19, 1982. This audio features speeches from Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) President Joseph E. Lowery, Walter E. Fauntroy, Reverend James Orange, SCLC members, and local political leaders addressing the importance of the Voting Rights Act, economic issues, labor laws, and intentions for the Pilgrimage to Washington. Lowery gives a speech, "We Are They", emphasizing the importance of unity and continuing the work of civil rights leaders and ancestors. Lowery also addresses foreign policy, Black communities, and other economic, political, and social concerns. This audio recording concludes with singing.
