- This audio recording features a church service at Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The service proceedings include songs (with performances by the children's choir), prayers, and a sermon delivered by Joseph E. Lowery (at 00:17:33). In his sermon, Lowery observes that Black History Month reminds him of the first verse in Chapter 12 of the Book of Hebrews ("Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses..."). Lowery states that the purpose of Black History Month is to act as a celebration of the past so as to understand its significance for the present and its signal for the future. Lowery goes on to speak about how the work of the civil rights movement must continue.
