- Description:
- This video features a press conference with Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Joseph E. Lowery in Atlanta, Georgia. Lowery speaks about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work for equity for all and how that work connects to affirmative action. Lowery goes on to speak about the importance of affirmative action and criticizes politicians who twist Dr. King's words. He also comments on the economic landscape in the U.S. The bulk of Lowery's comments in this press conference were driven by the news that the California Republican Party planned to use Martin Luther King, Jr.'s image and quotes from his "I Have a Dream" speech to promote Proposition 209, a ballot initiative to end most affirmative action programs in California.
