- Description:
- This video features footage of various scheduled events that are part of the SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Civil Rights Heritage Tour held on March 8-9, 1997. The video opens with preparations for the beginning of the tour at the SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. On the bus, Evelyn G. Lowery speaks to the tour attendees, introducing others and beginning her narration of the tour as they drive through Anniston, Alabama, marking the spot where Freedom Riders' buses were bombed. The bus proceeds to drive into Birmingham, Alabama, where Lowery is interviewed about the tour's purpose and activities by a reporter. The footage then switches to a luncheon event where several civil rights activists speak about their experiences in the civil rights movement, including Yvonne Turner. The video then proceeds to footage of Kelly Ingram Park and then shows the group assembled for a commemorative service to mark Jimmie Lee Jackson's memory. Then, there is footage of a visit to the National Voting Rights Museum & Institute, marching through the streets of Selma, Alabama, and remarks from U.S. Representative John Lewis. In conclusion, the video shows the group assembled at a commemorative service at the Viola Liuzzo memorial monument and tour attendees remark on their experience of the tour.
