- This video features footage of the gala event held at Atlanta Apparel Mart to mark Joseph E. Lowery's 80th birthday. The video includes opening comments from gala co-chairs Judy Anderson (from Georgia Power Company) and Carl Ware (from the Coca Cola Company) and a prayer led by Reverend Walter L. Kimbrough. The event's proceedings include performances from the Clark Atlanta University Jazz Orchestra. The program includes speakers and events that speak to Joseph E. Lowery's roles as a pastor, prophet, and advocate. Speakers at the birthday gala include Andrew Young, Lerone Bennett, Jr., U.S. Ambassador Charles Stith, James Lawson, and Mable Thomas. Thomas's speech prefaces the presentation of a street sign marking the name change from Ashby Street to Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard. The proceedings continue with remarks from Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell and Clark Atlanta University President Thomas Cole, then Lowery's three daughters perform a song. Lowery then comes to the podium and makes brief remarks, closing with an invitation for Cicely Tyson to address the crowd. Lowery returns to the podium to speak about his ongoing work as a civil rights advocate and the ceremony concludes with the presentation of a portrait of Joseph and Evelyn Lowery and a closing benediction from Bishop Barbara Lewis King.
