- Description:
- This video features a church service celebrating the 25th anniversary of Canaan Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia. The service proceedings include songs, a scripture reading, prayers, and a litany of dedication and other remarks from Reverend Dr. James Harold Carter. Joseph E. Lowery serves as the guest speaker at the anniversary event. Lowery's remarks are informed by the Book of Ecclesiastes, speaking of how "dark joy" has informed the lives of Black people. Lowery also asks the congregation "what time it is?", drawing from the 90th Psalm. In his remarks, Lowery asks if the congregation are making their time on Earth count. His speech touches on the social, economic, and political conditions of modern day America. The service continues with more remarks from Reverend Carter as well as from Georgia State Representative Calvin Smyre and other anniversary related service happenings.
