- Description:
- This audio recording features a first Sunday worship service on July 1, 1990 at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. This audio recording includes songs, scripture readings, and a sermon by Joseph E. Lowery (at 00:16: 05). In his sermon, Lowery addresses the idea of African Americans' refusal to celebrate the 4th of July because of the nation's racist history and challenges the congregation to consider the perspective, "To Whom Do You Belong?", emphasizing that as long as you are committed to God, then "patriotism will fall into its proper perspective". Lowery suggests neglecting the "chameleon complex" of changing to fit into an environment and encourages people to consistently commit to God no matter the circumstance. Lowery also encourages the congregation to be inspired by God's work through the example of Nelson Mandela's sacrifice, leadership, and release from prison as a reminder of the country's progress. This audio recording concludes with songs from the choir.
