- Description:
- This audio recording features a press conference in which Hosea Williams is interviewed regarding Joseph E. Lowery's decision to fire him from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) after 19 years of service. In the interview, Williams provides his account of why he was fired from SCLC and his reasons for appealing the decision. In the interview, Williams accuses Lowery of being a part-time president who would never give up his full-time pastoring career for SCLC, an inadequate leader in an attempt to continue Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream for SCLC, and one with "putrid" acts of discontinuing Williams' programs and service as the national executive director of SCLC. In the interview, Williams shares that his plans for the future include continuing to be an activist until the day he dies or until Black people are free. The press conference concludes with Hosea Williams listing his contributions to SCLC, his intentions to continue the movement for the progress of Black people, and plans to take Jesse Jackson's advice, "Do not compromise, take over or get out".
