- Description:
- This audio recording features proceedings from the National Conference on "Survival of the Black Family in the 80's" with a focus on the theme "The Black Male Child", sponsored by SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. on April 3, 1982 in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference identifies issues and adversity that Black men and Black male children face in society, education, and within oneself. The conference consists of economic, education, health, criminal justice, media, and sexuality workshops discussing the issues of poverty and unemployment, dropout rates, mobility, negative male role models in the media, and Black male relationships with Black women and debunking the "macho man" idea. At 00:21:40, psychology professor Naim Akbar speaks about the survival of the Black male child and family, oppression of Black men by society, school, and self, Atlanta's missing and murdered children, and the importance and impact of Black men's spirituality, accountability, and knowledge of self in society. At 00:57:57, Evelyn G. Lowery gives closing remarks.
