- Description:
- This audio recording features Jesse Jackson's speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 18, 1984 in San Francisco, California. In his speech, Jackson speaks about the opportunities of leadership, the importance of voting with conviction and consciousness, and support for the Democratic Party. He compares America's races of people to a rainbow and America's unity of diversity to a quilt because of its "many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread", emphasizing the differences of races, sexuality, age, ability, and other aspects. At 00:16:29, he adopts Joseph E. Lowery's slogan "We must turn to each other and not on each other." Jesse Jackson concludes his speech by challenging listeners to exercise the right to dream a new reality of a brighter future by using hope, love, peace, and teaching. Audio cuts out between 00:39:50 and 00:40:08.
