- This audio recording features a Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Board meeting held at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. The topic of discussion at the meeting is the proposed merger of Alabama State University with Auburn University. An Alabama State University representative speaks about how Alabama State University students, SCLC Alabama State Chapter, and Alabama community members will march to deliver the message that Black people in Alabama will persevere. The meeting, hosted by Johnnie Carr and Walter Fauntroy, includes speeches by Reverend John L. Offord, Fred Shuttlesworth, Reverend John Nettles and representatives of the Montgomery Improvement Association and songs from a gospel chorus. At 00:46:00, Joseph E. Lowery references Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, "Sleeping Through a Revolution", in which he speaks about Black people sleeping through a retrogression. Lowery encourages Blacks to participate in the revolution to fight for relevant and quality education in all neighborhoods, especially historically Black institutions such as Alabama State University.
