- Description:
- This audio recording features proceedings from the 29th Annual Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Convention on August 13, 1986 in Jacksonville, Florida. The recording begins with Reverend John Nettles introducing SCLC President Joseph E. Lowery. At 00:06:45, Lowery begins his presidential address with acknowledgements of SCLC members and speaks about honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. by spiritually carrying him during the march against the killings in Florida. Lowery gives a motivational speech in preparation for a march in which he charges the audience to take sacramental responses and responsibilities with the crisis and despair of poverty, drugs, the demise of the Black family, and other economic and political injustices. In his speech, Lowery emphasizes leading liberation lifestyles by depending on God, oneself, and the community to progress.
