- Description:
- This audio recording features the 3rd Annual SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Civil Rights Heritage Tour, founded by Evelyn G. Lowery in 1987. The audio recording begins in Birmingham, Alabama where Evelyn G. Lowery serves as the tour guide on her bus, speaking about the bombings at the 16th Street Baptist Church and A.G. Gaston Motel and pointing out Kelly Ingram Park. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Lowery highlights the 1st African Baptist Church, Earlean Isaac, the first Black woman probate judge in Alabama, and SCLC Board members. At 00:53:53, Lowery is introduced as the Madonna of the civil rights movement of America, in which she gives thanks to her oldest daughter Yvonne Lowery Kennedy for coordinating the Birmingham aspect of the tour and local community members such as Reverend James Orange, Reverend Gilmore, Reverend Nettles, and others. Lowery then previews the expectations for the remainder of the tour and upcoming SCLC conventions and the Drum Major for Justice Awards event, and concludes by asking the tour volunteers to introduce themselves.
