- Description:
- This audio recording features the first part of a church service at First Congregational Church in Atlanta, Georgia on November 21, 1999. The recording begins with prayer followed by singing from the First Congregational Church choir. At 00:27:05, Joseph E. Lowery reminds the congregation to "wipe the slate clean" and let go of hurt, then leads a prayer asking for strength and guidance in preparation for the new millennium. An unidentified woman introduces Reverend Dwight Andrews with a poem entitled, "Parallel Paths". As a dedication to Reverend Dwight and Desiree Andrews for spreading the church to the Black Arts Festival, schools, and the culture of jazz, the daughter of Andrew Young reads a letter from her father to Andrews. At 01:04:21, an unidentified woman gives a detailed introduction of Joseph E. Lowery. At 01:12:11, Lowery shares laughter with the congregation and gives the sermon, "Singing the Lord's Song in a Strange Land", in which he emphasizes the importance of spreading the word of God in unfamiliar environments and doing the right thing even in challenges. Audio is low.
