1207 West 28th Street little Rock, Arkansas November 21, 1962 Mr. Robert Cromie Chicago Tribune Chicago 11, IL Dear Mr. Cromie: Thanks for the clipping of October 28, 1962 of the review of "The Long Shadow of Little Rock" by Mr. Charles Purvis. Mr. Purvis pointed out that "Mrs. Bates seems not to have any room for tolerance of white persons nor under- standing that they also have faced many of the diffi- culties she wants cleared from the Negroes' path." I am well aware of the hardships suffered by the many whites who stand up for what they believe is right, as I pointed out in Chapter 14 - "White Casualties." I am also accutely aware that the number of whites who are willing to speak out against racial discrimination is far too small not only in the South but throughout America. Please inform Mr. Purvis that I appreciate his review and convey to him my warmest thoughts. Sincerely, Daisy Bates (Mrs.) B/w - Metadata URL:
