- Statement from Little Rock School Board members responding to United States Supreme Court decisions on Central High School integration
Integration -- Desegregation -- Little Rock Central High School -- African-Americans -- Blacks -- Little Rock (Ark.) -- Little Rock -- Pulaski
The Supreme Court of the United States has denied our request for a delay in the implementation of its decision to integrate public schools. It has further denied our appeal under which we earnestly sought the upholding of the Lemley decision. We will, therefore, open Central High School on Monday, September 15, 1958, and the seven negro students will be admitted, as there is now, apparently, no other choice. In behalf of the people of this community, we earnestly, request local, state and federal officials to take all ap- propriate steps tp protect our children and our teachers so that we may conduct an orderly and effective educational program. We sincerely hope the public will appreciate the position of the members of the School Board and pray that there will not be a repetition of the violance of last year.
