- Description:
- Bishop R. A. Carter described this volume as his literary effort of many years. The first part of the book focuses on his Morning meditations — sermons he gave at CME Church conferences in Texas and Arkansas between 1914 and 1916. There are also a few sermons given to other religious audiences included as well. The topics are mostly religious, but he did deliver a contentious sermon to a mostly white audience at the Methodist Episcopal General Conference in 1900. He reminded them that the color of a man's skin does not reflect the content of his character. The rest of the book features talks he gave to Black clubs, as well as addresses he made to six Historically Black Colleges: Paine College (his alma mater), Lane Institute, Gammon Seminary, A&M Alcorn College, Texas College and Morris Brown College. These talks focused on the uplift and education of African Americans. In his speeches at the colleges, he provided histories of the schools. Our copy has a library stamp from Boley High School in Boley, Oklahoma, noteworthy because it was one of Oklahoma's all-Black towns, one that exists to this day.
